The desk room opens at seven. So does the chai.

Twelve real desks with real chairs. Two separate internet lines, so one going down doesn't end your call. Calls happen here, never in the dorm.

Triund starts at the end of our lane.

Go early and do it properly, or take the short walk to the waterfall after lunch. The board by the door says which trails are muddy. Whoever came back last writes it.

Dinner's at eight. The guitar is not our fault.

Beds

Pick a bunk. Or a door that closes.

Three kinds of room. Dorm prices are per bed, private rooms per room. Friday and Saturday nights cost a little more.

The long table · 8 pm

Twelve chairs. It has seated twenty.

Dinner is family-style: dal, rice, rotis and whatever the kitchen felt like. ₹250, and seconds are included. So is the argument about the best momos in McLeod.

Shoes

Off in the dorms. Your bunkmates will thank you.

The gate

Last one up the lane after 11 locks it. The key hangs on the nail.

Getting here

Look for the green gate.

  1. Overnight bus to DharamshalaFrom Delhi's Kashmere Gate or Majnu ka Tilla. Sleep through the plains, wake up in the hills.
  2. Taxi up to DharamkotAsk for the upper taxi stand. It's all uphill from here, in a good way.
  3. Walk up the lanePast the chai shop, green gate on the left. If a brown dog walks you in, you're in the right place.
